On December 6, 1989, "Survival, Part Three" aired: the last premiere of a classic-series Doctor Who episode. For many fans, it was the beginning of long years in the wilderness. It was a different experience for me.
I was 10 at the time–I was busy learning all the words to the "Beaches" soundtrack at the time.

Hmmmm, fascinating. I am not sure I felt that day as momentously as you did. Did you have to look up that date at some point to find out exactly when Survival Part 3 ended?
I only ask that because I am not sure if on the 6 December there was a particularly high depression rate amongst fans. Even at that point there was still hope, still a feeling we might get another season.
The particular feeling you describe only happened for me about a year or so after the 1996 Telemovie. After Survival, I was involved with a fledgling club I had co-founded. There was tons of books to read. The VHS range was still kicking along quite nicely. And there were tons of stories I still hadn't seen. There was plenty for a fan to be getting on with, and all the time at the back of my mind there was still that hope.
That hope only finally dashed itself against the rocks of utter futility after it became apparent nothing was going to happen as a result of the telemovie.
